O trabalho apresenta uma das obras menos conhecidas do epistemólogo francês Gaston Bachelard, denominada Les Intuitions Atomistiques, sem tradução para o português. O livro apresenta aspectos filosóficos acerca do atomismo ao longo do tempo, tratando dos diferentes sistemas de pensamento que influenciaram na concepção e aceitação do átomo como explicação para os fenômenos da matéria. A divulgação, crítica e proposição das contribuições da obra às discussões sobre a história e filosofia da ciência no ensino de ciências são objetivos do presente artigo.
