Traditionally, the themes addressed by the history of architecture do not account for the building diversity that constitutes the built city. Recent efforts have been made to focus on non-monumental buildings, from more recent periods, not designed for elites, buildings that compose a significant part of the urban landscape of many Brazilian cities. The study of this production is essential to understand Brazilian architecture in its complexity. In addition to leading to historiographical reflections, this expansion of perspectives is also referred to the need of expending the contents that permeate architecture and urbanism education. This article presents a didactic experience of surveying self-built buildings, which seeks to broaden the view on real city architectures, developed from May to August 2022 in the discipline Theory and Critique of Contemporary Architecture in Latin America of the Architecture and Urbanism course at the Federal University of Uberlândia.
