In this interview with Maria Isabel da Cunha, carried out in May 2024, through the exchange of emails and telephone calls, the aim is to share aspects of the educator's personal and professional trajectory within the context of the military dictatorship that ravaged Brazil from the 1960s to the 1980s. Being born into a family with many women teachers led her to the Normal Course and to teaching as a profession. Maria Isabel initially pursued a degree in Social Sciences and later in Pedagogy, working in both basic education and higher education. She experienced firsthand the changes brought about by the significant educational legislations of 1968 and 1971 within schools. This entire formative process and her entry into the workforce took place during the dictatorship, which enabled the interviewee to develop a critical perspective on the role of education and to reframe the classroom. Maria Isabel draws attention to the non-neutrality of knowledge, the emancipatory role of the school, the teacher’s commitment to democratic causes, and the responsibilities of the State. She concludes by reflecting on the importance of esperançar, as taught by Paulo Freire, and the act of educating as a process of sharing knowledge, affections, and experiences.
