The ability of generative artificial intelligence to produce texts like those created by humans has led to social changes that continue to be studied. In education, there are positive aspects such as the possibility of personalized learning and immediate feedback, but there are also negative aspects, such as concerns about ethics, plagiarism and biased information. This study’s objective is to analyze the perception of engineering undergraduate students from a public university about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in their educational process, especially ChatGPT. A bibliographic survey on Scopus showed that there is a shortage of Brazilian research in the area. A questionnaire related to the use of AI in academic activities was created and sent to students. Based on the data obtained, it is possible to state that students barely use IA in the classroom but use it a lot outside of the classroom. Also, they claim that the tool is useful to clear doubts, even though they still show more trust in the information given by the teacher. This study allows college teachers to understand how engineering students have been using AI, which is useful to stimulate personal and collective reflections about how to integrate the tool into their subjects and to teaching, contributing to the field of Brazilian research on the topic.
