This study intends to reflect on care in the emergency ward from the point of view of patients' families. This research was carried out with the families of three patients at the emergency ward of a city in the south of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. We used participant observation and semi-structured and recorded interviews. The reports indicate a continuous absence of emotional involvement by health professionals, who still prioritize care for re-establishing physical health in contrast to a bond, receiving and therapeutic relationship. This study shows us the need to rethink professional practice in emergency wards, towards a care practice which also values the psychosocial needs of patients and families.Downloads
