The article presents the results of an exploratory investigation of qualitative nature developed with the objective of understanding the difficulties faced by women caregivers of the mentally ill who use alcohol and other drugs, seeking to contribute to improve the attendance rendered by this group. The speech analysis was used to interpret the content of the women's interviewed caregivers speeches. The analysis revealed that the consumption of psychoactive substances by the mentally ill patient difficult the treatment process and rehabilitation, worsening the family relationships. The results pointed that the professionals of health should find creative forms to approach the problem, prioritizing the service to the family and looking for the community's involvement.Downloads
