Abstract

Birth Centers are important in the current health policy scenery. The objective of this research is to describe the reasons why obstetric nurses work at Birth Centers. The method used for this research was based on oral history. Discontentment with obstetrical practices in hospitals, based on the biomedical model, and with the interventionist nature of hospital practices, as well as the desire of bringing about transformation resulted in the convergence of these professionals to the Birth Center. The nurses are deeply involved and committed to the success of their work because it is essential for the future of the center, as well as to other centers to be set up in Brazil.
