Abstract

This uses qualitative research with a phenomenological approach to understand the meaning attributed by mothers of newborn babies to nursing guidances on breastfeeding. Six mothers in a private, medium size hospital in the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. There then followed a comphrensive analysis of data based on procedures suggested by Martins & Bicudo and described by Freitas(9). The thematic units were organized as follows: Maternal Breastfeeding Orientation: providing comfort and safety; Breastfeeding: a construction in the relationship between mother and newborn; difficulties faced in maternal breastfeeding process: myths and truths.
