Since the conceptualist art of the 1960s and 1970s, we have witnessed successive transformations regarding what constitutes an author in the field of contemporary art. At the heart of this process lies the so-called “conceptual authorship”, characterized by the coexistence of the following aspects: an artwork of projective or propositional immanence; a notation system expressed or latent; and the existence of material occurrences that are carried out in accordance with the notational statement. Through the analysis of artists such as Antonio Lizárraga, Doris Salcedo, Maurizio Cattelan, Flávia Naves, Alison Knowles,
and Tania Bruguera, this paper aims to test the hypothesis that, in conceptual terms, there are at least three authorial types in contemporary art: the designer-like, the montage maker, and the proposer.
