In this paper, we undertake a detailed and comparative analysis of the works Antigonick by Anne Carson and Balkan Baroque by Marina Abramović, focusing on the representation and ritualistic aspects of mourning in each of them. Whilst Carson revisits the tragedy of Sophocles challenging established norms of translation and creating a veil of ambiguity that invites reflection regarding the hidden aspects and nuances of mourning, Abramović adopts an explicitly confrontational stance in an exploration of personal and collective pain caused by conflicts and tragedies. This study compares the ritualistic mourning as presented in classical Greek traditions, exploring how such practices are reinterpreted in the selected artworks – highlighting the contrast between Carson’s poetic and veiled approach and Abramović’s direct and visceral expression.
