The roots of university extension are linked to collaborative artistic practices with communities by seeking different roles through horizontal actions, as opposed to ephemeral actions and welfare-based approaches. Thus, this article seeks to weave a discourse about university extension in Visual Arts linked to collaborative activities based on examples of artistic projects with indigenous communities, supported by research and university extension. To build this dialogue, we considered some notes from Paulo Freire and theorists and artists in the field of contemporary art. These projects lead us to reflect on the need for the university to be in dialogue with communities, putting knowledge and knowledge into circulation to subvert the academic space in which these projects take place.
