In the first decades of film history, the then new art form enjoyed vast creative freedom, and was explored by artists from many different aesthetic schools, such as surrealists, cubists, Dadaists and Futurists. Terms such as “poly-expressive sym-phony”, “free words”, “plastic dynamism” and “syn-thetic theater” were used by theorists and artists seeking in the new technology a possibility for innovation in painting, music, dance and other art forms. Among all of these artists, Oskar Fischinger remains one of the most successful, though over time his work has been forgotten by much of the critics and the audiences. This article traces the course of his career since his youth and his first camera until his struggle with Walt Disney Studios and his eventual withdrawal, when he decides to abandon film for traditional painting and the gallery world.
