Between iconology and iconography, this essay attempts to discuss what we understand by an iconographic artist. It seeks to understand artists who are problematizing their practices around questions about the history of images and the resonance they can cause in the critical and artistic environment in which they operate. The artist, as well as the iconographer, make a cut in the materiality of the images, bringing them to a context in which the critical and artistic sense is like a projectile to elucidate the moving places of history. Images are recontextualized and enter into a new symbolic negotiation, elucidating questions that the artist wishes to indicate. As a method, it revisits some foundations of the field of iconography and iconology, from Aby Warburg and Erwin
Panofsky, together with Walter Benjamin’s reflections on the dialectics of the image, to propose an analysis of the temporality of the image in the visual poetics of contemporary iconographic artists.
