Abstract

Based on Bakhtin's theory of language, we intend to discuss Ari Aster's cinema in Midsommar: Evil does not wait for the night (2019). Our proposal goes through four main points; the history of the concept of horror cinema analyzing its transformations in the time and space of language production; Midsommar's relationship of contamination and dialogue with horror works aimed at the general public; the controversies involved within the horror genre and the supposed new 'post-horror' sub-genre. Finally, the enunciative paths of Aster's direction, when constructing in Midsommar a metalanguage that reflects the history of horror genre cinema.
