Abstract

this article deals with the vindication of the idea of English empire in English Humanity No Paradox, or, An Attempt to prove, that the English are not a Nation of Savages, a pamphlet written by Edward Long and published by Thomas Lawndes in the year 1778. I argue that the pamphlet, little explored by historiography, in addition to a response to the French philosophes Jean-Jacques Rousseau and François Marie Arouet, also had as its purpose the defense and exaltation of the idea of English empire, as well as the rescue of very esteemed discussions to Long, among them the hierarchy of human races and the imperial competition between France and England.
