Abstract

Departing from a malaise generated by ontologizing and technicist conceptions of photography (SONTAG and BARTHES), this paper analyzes photographic portraits of black subjects produced inside studios in the last decades of the 19th century in Brazil, aiming to destabilize conceptions that approach the photographic images submitting them to a reality a priori. After an historical incursion into the visual traditions that ground the production of these portraits, we propose the analysis of a contemporary reinterpretation of one of these photographs, thus aiming to destabilize the frame (BUTLER) that imposes a certain orientation of the eye before these images and these subjects.
