Abstract

The article deals with racism in Salvador's carnival and aims to oppose DaMatta's (1997) classic thesis that the carnival party in Brazil would be egalitarian and racially harmonious. The problem was born from my perception of racism when participating in the party, and its results are pursued through the analysis of the CEI of racism (1999), established by the city hall of Salvador to investigate complaints about the creation of racial barriers to the exclusion of black revelers from the private trio blocks. Authors such as: Guerreiro (2010), Miguez (1999), Moura (1996) (2001) and Santanna (2009) who dealt with Salvador's carnival and its contradictions served as references. The present text also reflects on the results of the CEI of racism for later carnivals that, despite not being configured as radical measures, drew the attention of authorities and civil society to racial problems in carnival.
