Abstract

The objective of this article is to present an overview of the Brazilian Army in the 19th century through the eyes of military periodicals, published between 1854 and 1879. Such periodicals are inserted within the field of military periodical press, and are configured as a source and object of research. During the 19th century, the military periodical press was active, publishing several newspapers in many provinces of the Empire. The study of periodicals is important to understand the discourse conveyed in them and their analysis contributes with important considerations about the history of the Brazilian Army in the 19th century. This study is inserted within the field of New Military History which, through a new focus, helps the historian to deal with new problems and new perspectives within the study of military institutions. The discourse of the periodicals and the situation of the Army in the period leads us to think about the issues of professionalization of the Brazilian armed force in the 19th century and its implications.
