Abstract

The Museu do Piauí - Casa de Odilon Nunes refers to a heritage site of great historical and cultural value to the population of Piauí. However, we question the reductionist and stereotyped way in which Afro-Brazilian history and culture are often represented within this memory space. Given this context, through an observation of the objects that make up the museum's collection, intended to reference Afro-Brazilian history and culture, we aimed to understand how black people are represented in the Museu do Piauí - Casa de Odilon Nunes. To achieve this objective, a necessary historicization of the Museu do Piauí was carried out, as well as pertinent discussions about this space. Through a critical approach, we intend to understand what message the museum and its museum collection convey to us. To guide our discussions, we sought the contributions of: Suano (1986), Pantaleão (2006), Nascimento (2019), and Lara (1988).
