Paradoxes of Communist Support for the Creation of the State of Israel: An Investigation in Light of the Political Nature of the Soviet State

This article aims to clarify the motivations behind the Soviet Union's support for the creation of the State of Israel in 1948. We first briefly discuss Zionism in its discursive and practical dimensions, as well as the circumstances and context that enabled the realization of its project—the creation of a Jewish state. Subsequently, we analyze the political nature of the Soviet state through the concept of Stalinism, as developed by Leon Trotsky and the subsequent wave of historians who have embraced this terminology. This movement allowed us to formulate the hypothesis that, given the specific international context and the political nature of the regime that emerged in the Soviet Union, recognizing the creation of the State of Israel was a way to guarantee Soviet political objectives in the international arena. Likewise, stability and the possibility of undermining, even minimally, British influence in the region were among the motivations behind this decision.
