Abstract

This article analyses the disputes surrounding the contestation of public monuments in the twenty-first century, considering them as sites of tension between past and present. Drawing on emblematic cases, it demonstrates how statues, far from being inert objects, become arenas of symbolic disputes where different actors reinterpret collective memory. Acts of contestation do not entail erasure but rather a reconfiguration of meanings: when criticised, attacked, or removed, monuments remain alive in public debate, highlighting the ongoing relevance of the memories they evoke. Thus, the article discusses how persistent pasts have put tension on the present and, reciprocally, how the present reinterprets and reinvents the past.
