The power over the elements of Nature in Abbo of Fleury’s Passio Sancti Eadmundi (c. 987)

The Passio Sancti Eadmundi, a hagiography written by Abbo of Fleury at the end of the 10th century, narrates the life and martyrdom of Edmund, king of East Anglia, facing Danish invaders attacks. Hinguar, one of the leaders of the invasion, is described by a messenger under his command as “the greatest of monarchs,” to whom “storms and sea tempests serve” and “the elements of nature obey”. The aim of this article is to analyze this literary construct, previously neglected by historiography, in light of the intellectual and biographical repertoire of its author, in dialogue with the Christian culture of his time. To this end, this research analyzes the narrative voice, lexical choices, and intertextual elements of the source; Abbo’s intellectual repertoire based on his readings at Fleury; contemporary notions regarding “weather magic” and paganism as Christian value judgments; and Abbo’s personal experience with storms. Drawing on a Vorstellungsgeschichte (Hans-Werner Goetz), it is expected that the analyses will allow a more nuanced understanding of Hinguar’s characterization through Abbo’s perceptions within his historical context.
