Abstract

Antônio Pereira de Figueiredo can be considered as one of the main theorists of illustrated Lusitanian reformism. In his work, he defended, throughout the period defined in the historiography as Pombaline Reforms (1755-1777), the importance of a State independent of the interferences of the church. The Tentativa Teológica, which we analyze in this article, is an exemplary book when we focus on this theme. Therefore, the present text focuses on its main arguments, relating them to the theoretical and political principles that guided the Pombaline measures.
