Abstract

This article aims to analyze and interpret the film Old and New (1929), directed by Soviet filmmaker Serguei Eisenstein. The plot revolves around Marfa, a poor peasant who realizes the need for change in her environment. We follow her journey as she becomes a political agent, facing various challenges until she achieves her goal: replacing the old with the new, with collectivization and mechanization replacing the unequal control of the s. Thus, in addition to exploring Marfa's situation, Eisenstein offers a broader reflection on the historical context of the beginning of the Stalinist revolution. This article proposes to discuss how History and Cinema can be articulated when analyzing the representations of the revolution promoted by Stalin, through the use of the documentary method and the interpretation of images, by Ralf Bohnsack.
