This article proposes a contribution, in a sort of hermeneutics of praxis, for an initial understanding of the genre commented translation – little discussed, but very common – in Translation Studies, in the academic environment, more specifically, in the context of masters dissertations. To this end, we present examples of two dissertations, the first one, discussing a translation with notes and the second one, a translation with commentary, both from French into Brazilian Portuguese, whose results fit, in our understanding, in this genre. We will also deal with issues related to some published works and a discussion on the relationship between the academic practice of commented translation and its possible theoretical foundations.
