This paper is meant to analyze how words and photographs are related in three works belonging to the memoir genre: catalan Agustí Centelles’s Diario de un fotógrafo. Bram, 1939, Robert Capa’s Ligeiramente fora de foco, and Capa and John Steinbeck’s Um diário russo. The three works share the circumstance that their authors, with the exception of Steinbeck, participated as war photographers in crucial historical events of the twentieth century: the Spanish Civil War and World War II. The analysis provides reflections on the special connections of photographs and memoirs with the reality and singles out as well the mechanisms used by the authors in their quest for a pictorial-literary language apt to convey intimate experiences in the whirl of collective and historical events.
