Abstract

Before being the author of Rembrance of Things Past, Marcel Proust was the translator of two of John Ruskin’s titles: Our Fathers Have Told Us / La Bible d’Amiens (1904) and Sesame and Lilies / Sésame et les Lys (1906). Despite his lack of knowledge of the English language, he managed to take active part in the intellectual milieu of the time, when he divulged some of this polemic Englishman’s texts, rivaled with other consecrated translators, and called the attention upon his innumerable comments on the texts and their author, in prefaces, footnotes and afterwords, in both translations. More than just rewriting, into French, the original text, he wrote his own theses supported on the author’s theses – imposing his reading of Ruskin upon his readers, and establishing a dialogue between Ruskin’s text and his own, of which the reader is the witness.
