“Tales” and “Sketches”: Speech and Narrative Genre in Translation

In this paper, we comment on our translation of “A Few Crusted Characters” (1894), by Thomas Hardy, into Brazilian Portuguese, focusing on the multiplicity of speeches and narrative genres seen in the original text. The translation of those aspects, which are considered by Mikhail Bakhtin (2002) as fundamental constituents of literary prose, is discussed when we approach both the multiplicity of narrators in the stories, some of them showing marks of dialect, and Hardy’s insertion and subversion of different literary genres. By doing so, we intend to reflect on the role of translations with commentary within the more general outlook of translation studies, since, for Antoine Berman (2013), those aspects are one of the great challenges found in literary prose translation.
