Hermetism and Provocation: on Walter Benjamin’s “The Task of the Translator”

The hermetism of Walter Benjamin’s writing represents at the same time an attraction and a challenge for his readers. Juxtaposing apodictic assertions, he gives by himself an example for this ambivalence by his – provocative – idea that the literary work, nor the translation of this work would not be directed to its reader. Considering the communicative use of language as an abuse, Benjamin defends not only the autonomy of the work, but also of the translation as a “form”. Not being a communication channel to the original, nor its derivation, the task of the translation consists in waking up the “pure language” in the original. Thus, hidden correspondences have to replace the linear communication.
