Joan Ponç, Spanish avant-garde, poetry, art, Brazilian poetryAbstract
In the 1940s, Spain experienced an immediate postwar period marked by a devastating panorama: physical and moral hunger, ideological persecutions, arbitrary imprisonment and empty promises of “peace”. Gradually, bread begins to appear at the grocery stores and both moral and aesthetic hunger makes its first claims. That moment in which Spanish cultural scene struggles against aridity and apathy is, precisely, the starting point of our proposal: to examine the artistic-cultural reaction of Barcelona based on the career and performance of the painter Joan Ponç. Our work examines his relationship with some avant-garde groups inserted in the bleak context of the immediate post-civil war in Spain and discusses how his close contact with some Brazilian poets was decisive for Brazil to be part of his biographical and creative horizon, as well as an alternative to the European panorama.
