Abstract

Specializations in dentistry are so deeply rooted that their presence in clinical practices are not only accepted, but also demanded by the consumers themselves. Among the varied specialties, public health consists of a set of theories and practices that organize and differentiate themselves in such a way as to understand, explain, and modify the health-illness process, in both its material and non-material aspects, in the collective dimension, as well as in the forms of socially organized answers to confront health needs. The objective of this study was to assess the different dimensions related to dentists, specialists in public health, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Cross-sectional and descriptive studies were conducted by applying a self- explanatory questionnaire involving the specialists in public health sector in Minas Gerais. In this manner, the information from the applied questionnaires was collected and a data base was formulated, followed by analysis carried out using the statistical program SPSS version 13.0. The results showed that the majority (55.75%) of these professionals were working in Belo Horizonte. Of the analyzed population, 67.2% were female and 35.8% had concluded the specialization course within 4 years after having completed their undergraduate degree. Regarding salary, approximately 30% receive up to 5 minimum wages and 52.3% reported having opted for public health services due to the fact that they were already working in the public health sector. With regard to the professions of the specialists, there was a balance among work in children’s institutions (53.7%), work with pregnant patients (43.3%), and work in the area of gerondontology (34.3%). Thus, a growth in the number of dental surgeons, specialists in public health in Minas Gerais, could be observed in this study, with the majority based in Belo Horizonte. Moreover, the difficulties in placing these professionals in defined and well-structured public health programs could also be observed.
