Dentistry research at state of Minas Gerais - Brazil
relation between FAPEMIG and scientific productivity
Keywords:
Dental research, Support of researchAbstract
The Foundation for Research Support from the state of Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG) is the only funding agency for scientific research in this state. It was created in 1985 and implemented in 1986, with a spirit and a sense of urgency to incorporate technology within the industrial sector. Due to the scarcity of studies which actually mapped scientific production and its relation with the funding of projects by FAPEMIG, this study aims to determine what scientific products in the field of dentistry have been generated from the funding of scientific and technological research projects by FAPEMIG’s General Announcement. Data were collected from FAPEMIG files according to the general characteristics of the approved projects as well as the scientific productivity in dentistry from the General Announcements between the years of 1990 and 2002. Within the assessed period, 55 approved projects had 33 different researchers as coordinators, covering 10 different specialties, including 40 projects (72.7%) from public institutions (federal and state). As regards the obtained results, the most commonly found were publications in the annals of scientific events (55.5%), followed by complete publications (18.5%) and advising of first-year science students (15.5%). Complete international publications were more common than were national publications. It can therefore be concluded that different areas of dentistry were contemplated in the General Announcements, with limited participation from masters and doctors, linked to the financed research projects and a continuous search for publications in journals of proven scientific quality.
