Abstract

After 90 years, the School of Dentistry - UFMG has changed its clinical work environment. Hence, this study undertook to assess the attitudes and perceptions of dental students, as well as the attitudes of professors and employees, as regards teamwork activities proposed by this dental care model. In addition, the pros and cons for the adherence to this new model were assessed. The qualitative methodology involved the use of participating observation at the dental clinics and a focus group including students. A descriptive analysis of the observations and a content analysis were carried out. From the observed items, most students and assistants developed a suitable teamwork, except in the use of instrumentation techniques. Cons were represented by the number of employees, the involvement of some professors, and the lack of equipment. Despite the low proportion of success in applying instrumentation techniques, students did work effectively as a team, as they shared functions and steps of dental care. The design of the physical space of the modules implemented within the dental clinic at UFMG, as well as its elements and ergonomic characteristics, allowed for the development of suitable teamwork in dental care. A permanent follow-up process regarding the new model should be carried out, considering the pros and cons of the aspects observed.
