Abstract

Results from a recent national epidemiological survey regarding oral health reveal high percentages of elderly with missing teeth, many of whom require prosthetic rehabilitation. The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of removable complete prosthesis rehabilitation on the quality of life of independent elderly individuals who participate in social activities. The present study’s sample was made up of elderly individuals who participated in support Groups sponsored by the City of Belo Horizonte (Brazil) in 2004. The sample calculation was determined by the proportion method (a 95% confidence interval, a a error of 0.05, and an 80% impact proportion). After adjusting to a finite population, the sample size was determined at n = 245, proportionately distributed among the nine administrative districts of the city. Individuals were interviewed at the location of the support Group meetings by a single researcher using the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI). Data were organized into graphs and tables for the presentation of the results. The average GOHAI value was 36.82 (± 5.75). Twenty-six percent of the individuals “always” experienced limitations in the masticatory function; 19% “sometimes” experienced problems swallowing; 69% did not restrict social contacts due to their appearance; and 22% “always” used medication to alleviate dental pain or discomfort. Rehabilitation through removable complete dental prostheses imposes a limiting impact on the quality of life of elderly individuals, thus indicating the need for investments in health promotion programs that address the preservation of natural dental elements.
