Cassava flour productivity in the North of Minas Gerais

Cassava is one of the most important sources of energy for human consumption, especially for low-income populations. Its root stores a large amount of starch, in addition to being used as a raw material in numerous industrial products. It also plays an important role in generating employment and income, especially in the poor areas of the Northern Region of Minas Gerais. The objective of this work was to evaluate five varieties of cassava, aiming to promote the improvement of competitiveness in the agro-industrial chain of cassava in the North of Minas Gerais, in order to identify the best variety for the production of flour. The experiment was carried out from November/2018 to January/2020, on the São Geraldo farm of the Federal Institute of Education and Science and Technology of Northern Minas Gerais (IFNMG) in the municipality of Januária-MG, under rainfed conditions. The characteristics of tuberous root yield, starch content, yield and flour yield were evaluated. The varieties used were: Castelão, IAC-12, Canela de Ema, Projetinho and Olho Roxo. The harvests took place at 8, 10, 12 and 14 months of age of the plants. The Castelão variety can be harvested, ten months after planting, for the production of flour and starch, as long as it presents starch content and flour yield above 30%. The highest flour yields were obtained by the varieties Olho Roxo (38.0 bags of flour of 50 kg per hectare) and Projetinho (31.33 bags of flour of fifty kilos per hectare), after 14 months of age.
