A neuroscientific perspective on music

Abstract

The field of neuroscience has brought several contributions to numerous different areas, in order to achieve a better understanding of the human brain function. Also, many articles have been pointing out to music as a rehabilitation tool in different neurological alterations, such as aphasia, autism and dyslexia. This article presents a review of representative studies published in the last decade about neuroscience and music, especially on the areas quoted above. In conclusion, one can perceive the possibilities of contributions from neuroscience to the field of music itself, as well as music pedagogy, music performance and music therapy.

Author Biographies

Viviane Cristina da Rocha, Mackenzie Presbyterian University, São Paulo, SP (Brazil)

Soprano, she began her musical studies in 2003. She studied at the Escola Municipal de Música de São Paulo, under under the orientation of Caio Ferraz. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Music with a major in Lyrical Singing from the Institute of Arts at UNESP by Márcia Guimarães and Martha Herr. She received an Excellence Award for her TCC entitled "O preparador vocal e seu The vocal coach and his work together with the choir conductor - The case of the Chamber Choir of UNESP", with orientation of Martha Herr. Master student in Development Disorders at Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie, where she develops research on the relationship between brain and between brain and music in the Laboratory of Cognitive and Social Neuroscience under the guidance of Professor Paulo Boggio. She works professionally as a singer, choir vocal coach, and teacher. She is currently teaching at Conservatório Souza Lima Conservatory in São Paulo.

Paulo Sérgio Boggio, Mackenzie Presbyterian University, São Paulo, SP (Brazil)

Psychologist, specialist in Neuropsychology, Master in Experimental Psychology and PhD in Neurosciences and Behavior from the University of São Paulo. Researcher productivity 2 at CNPq. Adjunct Professor in the Graduate Program in Developmental Disorders and in the Psychology Course at Mackenzie Presbyterian University. Research Coordinator, Coordinator of the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience and Coordinator of the Laboratory of Cognitive and Social Neuroscience of the Center for Biological Sciences and Health at Mackenzie Presbyterian University.
