Abstract

As numerous as the harmonic techniques that emerged in the 20th century are the theories attempting to explain them. Few composers from that time did not engage in speculations regarding new ways to relate pitches, generate new chords, create new harmonic fields, and develop procedures to transform and manipulate them. Also, few of these composers did not publish analyses of their own works, dissecting their techniques and procedures, contributing to a better appreciation of these works but limiting the range of interpretations that other analysts could offer, had they not been silenced by the supposedly definitive verdict of the creator of both the technique and the work.
