Abstract

Elucidation of how the poetic and musical elements of oral native tradition, specifically of Northeastern singing, were transported to piano by Brazilian composer José Siqueira (1907-1985) in the Três Cantorias de Cego (Three Songs of the Blind). As a representative of Brazilian nationalism, Siqueira establishes his vocabulary and musical style through the use of elements of the native tradition. Many aspects of Northeastern singing tradition are represented: the folkloric melodies; the models of verses used by the singers; the alternation between voice and instrumental part; the instruments; the characteristics of vocal emission.
