Abstract

This study is part of the doctoral dissertation "An Investigation of African and Haitian rhythms on the development of the Cuban Habanera, Brazilian Tango/Chôro Brasileiro and American Ragtime - 1791 to 1900" (Shenandoah University, 1999). It aims at tracing the evolution of the "delay factor" that occurs in Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) and its interpretation in Brazilian Tangos and Chôros.

Author Biography

  • Tânia Mara Lopes Cançado, Federal University of Minas Gerais

    she is a professor of Piano, Brazilian Music, and Music Education at the School of Music at UFMG. She holds a doctorate in Music Education from Shenandoah University, USA, and defended the thesis An Investigation on African and Haitian Rhythms in the Development of the Cuban Habanera, Brazilian Tango/Chôro, and North American Ragtime – 1791 to 1900. She has performed recitals of Brazilian music in the United States, Europe, and the major concert halls in Brazil. She released the CD Tribute to Ernesto Nazareth, which was nominated for the Sharp Award in 1994, and the CD Conexão, in which she performs a repertoire for solo piano and chamber music, featuring works from the three Americas, strongly influenced by African music. She founded and directed the CEM – Children's Music Center at UFMG, served as Director of the School of Music at UFMG from 1990 to 1994, and as Vice-Director from 1986 to 1990.
