Abstract

Último retrato is a song composed by Dinorá de Carvalho with lyrics by Maria Antonia whose documentary sources had not been located until 2023. The specific objectives of this article are: (i) to provide context about the creation of this song in its chamber and orchestral versions; (ii) to report the process of locating the musical documentary sources and transcribing the handwritten scores; (iii) to comment on the compositional strategy employed; and (iv) to publish the edition of the score in its chamber version. The methodology employed for the analysis of the song's creation context was the Documentary Analysis. The musical editing methodology undertaken was the Copy-text. As a result, the first complete musical edition of Último retrato in its chamber and orchestral versions was created. We hope to contribute to the dissemination of this artistic production by authors who are not often the subject of academic study in Brazil.

  • Tadeu Moraes Taffarello, State University of Campinas, Brazil

    Tadeu Moraes Taffarello is a composer and music researcher. As a composer, his work focuses on instrumental and vocal music. As a researcher, he has been working at the Contemporary Music Documentation Center (CDMC) of the University of Campinas (Unicamp) since 2015. His current research is in the area of music publishing, resulting in the publication by the CIDDIC-CDMD Collection of books of musical scores whose documentary sources are in the CDMC collection. He is also accredited as a permanent professor in the postgraduate program in music at the Institute of Arts of Unicamp, where he teaches courses and supervises master's and doctoral thesis.

  • Raquel Juliana Prado Leite de Sousa, State University of Campinas, Brazil

    PhD in Education from UFSCar, in the area of History, Philosophy and Sociology of Education. She completed her postdoctoral studies at UFSCar, working with metric studies of scientific production. She holds a degree in Journalism (UNESP), Library Science and Information Science (UFSCar) and a degree in Portuguese Language (FIMI). She is currently a librarian at the Center for Documentation of Contemporary Music (CDMC) at UNICAMP. She has teaching experience in Library Science in both face-to-face and distance learning courses. She is a member of research groups on Brazilian music, reading and writing policies, and distance learning.

  • Lucas Zewe Uriarte, State University of Maringá, Brazil

    Lucas Zewe Uriarte holds a Bachelor's degree in Musical Composition from Unicamp (2012), a Master's degree (2015) and a Doctorate in Music (2021) from the same institution. He was supervised by Prof. Dr. José Augusto Mannis throughout his academic studies and received funding from FAPESP for his scientific initiation and doctoral projects. His research interests are musical creation and analysis, with a particular emphasis on contemporary music and Brazilian song repertoire. He works as a composer, arranger, choral conductor, accompanist, and teacher in the areas of music theory, perception, analysis, composition, and guitar.

  • Flávio Cardoso de Carvalho, Federal University of Uberlândia, Brazil

    Full Professor at the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU), Post-Doctorate in Music from UFMG in 2017. As an opera singer, he has performed in recitals, concerts, and operas in Brazil and abroad, always dedicated to promoting the repertoire of Brazilian art songs. He participated in the creation of the Norms for the Pronunciation of Brazilian Portuguese in Classical Singing in 2007, actively working on its dissemination. As a researcher, he works in the fields of Brazilian Historical Musicology, Vocal Pedagogy, and Critical Editions of Brazilian art songs, with five published books: Canções de Dinorá de Carvalho: Uma análise interpretativa (2002); A ópera Abul de Alberto Nepomuceno: patrimônio musical na Primeira República do Brasil (2016); Canções de Dinorá de Carvalho para voz e piano (2017); Salmo XXII para barítono e conjunto de câmara (2019); and Peças corais de Dinorá de Carvalho: para coro SATB a cappella (2020).

  • Caio Csizmar Soares Lourenço, State University of Campinas, Brazil

    Graduated in composition at EMESP Tom Jobim in 2022 and currently studying composition at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), he works in the area of composition and musical research, with an emphasis on contemporary music. As a composer, his music has participated in several festivals and programs in Brazil and abroad. In 2023, he was a participant in the Atelier de Composição Lírica at Theatro São Pedro, which encourages the creation of an opera and grants a scholarship to those selected. He currently works at CDMC as a scientific initiation scholarship holder from Fapesp, with the research Jogos no parque infantil Dom Pedro II, by Dinorá de Carvalho: musical edition.

  • Vitor Alves de Mello Lopes, State University of Campinas, Brazil

    Vitor Alves de Mello Lopes is a pianist, composer, researcher, and music editor. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Classical Piano and Music Composition from the University of Campinas (Unicamp), and was a scholarship recipient of the Magda Tagliaferro Foundation between 2017 and 2018. He is currently a Master's student in Music at the Institute of Arts of Unicamp, in the area Music: Theory, Creation and Practice, and the research line Music, Culture and Society. His research focuses on the solo piano works of composer Dinorá de Carvalho, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Tadeu Moraes Taffarello.

  • Elias Aparecido Corrêa, State University of Campinas, Brazil
    Elias Aparecido Corrêa is a violist, violinist, composer, researcher and teaches violin and viola at the Momento Musical school in Campinas. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Music in the Viola d'Arco category from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp). Currently at the Institute of Arts at Unicamp, he is graduating in Composition, and is also a Master's student in Music, in the area Music: Theory, Creation and Practice, and the research line Music, Culture and Society. His research is an ethnographic work on the Irish traditional music scene in the state of São Paulo, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Suzel Ana Reily.
