Abstract

This article summarizes the doctoral dissertation Treze Canções de Amor (Thirteen Songs of Love): a song cycle by Camargo Guarnieri which had the main purpose of bringing new information about the song cycle of the Brazilian composer to improve vocal performance and pedagogy. Aspects of the composer’s life and work were presented to place him within the context of the Brazilian society and the historical events in which he took part.

Author Biography

  • José Vianey dos Santos, Federal University of Paraíba

    José Vianey dos Santos, tenor, graduated in Artistic Education with a specialization in Music and studied Singing, History, and Theory of Music at the Music Department of the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), Campus I, João Pessoa - PB. In Brazil, his main singing teachers were Tika Porto, Carmela Mattoso, Zuinglio Faustini, and Edmar Ferretti, and abroad, Grayson Hirst, Michael Forest, and Janette Ogg. In Munich, Germany, he specialized in Lied interpretation. Since 1991, he has been a Singing professor at the Music Department of UFPB, João Pessoa, engaging in pedagogical, artistic, and research activities, and has performed in recitals and concerts throughout Brazil and abroad. In João Pessoa, he was a founding member of several musical groups focused on vocal music, such as Anima, Associação Lírica Bel Canto, and Camena (Ancient Music). He holds a Master's and Doctorate in Music (MM, DMA - Vocal Performance) from Shenandoah University, USA.
