Abstract

This work addresses the process of collecting available Brazilian works for double bass in Brazil and the development of an online catalog for this repertoire from 1993 to 2005. The text outlines the criteria for organizing, structuring, and updating the catalog, as well as a listing of the works it comprises, divided into the categories: solo double bass, double bass with piano, chamber double bass, and double bass soloist with orchestra. Entries from the catalog in its three main versions (1996, 1998, and 2005) illustrate the updates made over nearly a decade.

Author Biography

  • Sônia Ray, Federal University of the State of Goiás

    Sônia Ray is a professor at EMAC-UFG, where she teaches double bass, chamber music, research methodology, and appreciation and critique of contemporary music. She holds a Ph.D. in Performance and Pedagogy of Double Bass from the University of Iowa, USA, where she was a CAPES scholarship recipient under the supervision of Diana Gannett. She has regularly performed as a soloist and chamber musician (including the Duo Marray with pianist Marina Machado) in Brazil (Brasília, Goiânia, and São Paulo) and the USA (Iowa City, Oberlin, Indianapolis, and San Diego), having premiered several Brazilian works for double bass. A founding member of ABC (Brazilian Association of Double Bassists), she conceived and co-organized five international meetings of double bassists, two national composition competitions, and one soloist competition for the instrument. Currently, she is developing research projects in the areas of psychology of musical performance and cataloging (editing and publishing) Brazilian music for double bass. She is the Coordinator of GEPEM (Research Group in Musical Performance).
