Abstract

The learning process for, and qualification of, string players in Brazil is hampered by a series of problems. These are related to the musical tradition of Brazilian people, the availability of elementary, undergraduate and graduate instruction, the number of qualified instructors, the acquisition of instruments and other musical materials and the working field. My doctoral research on this subject finished in 1993 and available from University Microfilms International, identified serious problems forming a vicious circle whose primary component is the basic instruction of the instrumentalist – aggravated by the lack of expectations for solutions.
