Abstract

This study aims at presenting a critical edition of Alberto Nepomuceno’s Valsas Humorísticas op. 22 as well as a discussion of criteria and sources used in the restoration process of his only work for piano and orchestra. After pertinent questions such as philosophical approaches to the editing process as well as practical considerations on matters of editorial choices, it deals with early manifestations of nationalism in Brazilian music as displayed in the works of Nepomuceno. Finally, this paper compiles and analyzes the sources for the proposed edition regarding their degree of reliability and hierarchy. Tables illustrating choices and editorial decisions follow each one of the six Valsas Humorísticas.
