Abstract

The present article aims to discuss the performance of an important person in the educational and scientific scene of Brazil in the late nineteenth century, French professor, engineer and scientist Claude-Henri Gorceix. Through the involvement of this subject in the debates about school education in the Empire, we sought to analyze the nuances, barriers and vicissitudes that marked the organizing process of public education - especially at the secondary level - in Brazil and, more specifically, in Minas Gerais. In the following pages, we analyze the participation of Henri Gorceix in the debate about public education, seeking to identify the ideas mobilized by the teacher about secondary education, and the problems and gaps pointed out by him as brands of this branch of education in Brazil. On the other hand, we seek to shed light on Gorceix's performance as an "mediator intellectual", highlighting his participation in the exchange between different school cultures in the studied period.
