Abstract

The research that underlies the protection of the Historic District of Manaus / AM, produced by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional - Iphan, while presenting the criteria that support the choice of the urban site as an object of safeguard, poses the challenge of management of this space as Cultural Heritage based on rules that aim to regulate the process of “making the city”. This article presents the approaches developed in the regularization process of the Center of Manaus / AM, which included the realization of a social research that aimed to gather data to make technical perspectives compatible with that of social perception. In this sense, the approach cooperated to “think the city” generating the approach to those who perceive, attribute values and appropriate the cultural assets and spaces of the historic district, the citizens. In short, this experience that is now reported, endorses the debate around the policy of urban cultural heritage and its intrinsic relationship to the aspects of immaterial culture that give it value and recognition.

Author Biographies

Matheus Cássio Blach, Iphan - Historiador

Matheus Cássio Blach is a Historian (2011) with a master's degree in Built Environment and Sustainable Heritage from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (2017). He is currently a Historian at the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan). He was a member of the Brazilian Committee of the International Council for Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS / BRASIL) between 2017 and 2019; member of the editorial team of the Revista Patrimônio Magazine: built environment and sustainable heritage (UFMG) between 2015 and 2019; member of the Institute for Sustainable Development Studies (IEDS) between 2015 and 2019. He published 7 articles in specialized journals and 4 papers in the annals of events. It has 1 book chapter and 3 published books. It has 5 items of technical production, among which stand out "Specialized consultancy services regarding the material and intangible heritage of the municipalities impacted by the rupture of the Fundão Dam" and "Studies for tipping instructions: São Miguel Arcanjo Church, Baía da Traição (PB) ". He was the author of the historical and methodological research that guided the production of the documentary "Barba, Cabelo, Mustache". He participated in 21 events in Brazil, having been a member of organizing commissions for 6 of these. He has already carried out and coordinated technical and research works on History and Cultural Heritage in more than 40 Brazilian cities. Among the 5 awards received, the "Academic Highlight of Centro Universitário UNA" stand out for the work "Power and Sociability Relationships in the City of Tiradentes, Minas Gerais" in 2009 and the "Portal de Ouro UNA" award for having obtained the best average general approval in the History course, graduating with honors, in 2011. He works in the technical, teaching and research areas in History and Cultural Heritage with an emphasis on studies on culture and cities, conservation of cultural assets, history of cities, sustainable development, relations of power and sociability, memory and identity.
Mauro Augusto Dourado Menezes, IPHAN

Mestre em Sociedade e Cultura na Amazônia, Bacharel e licenciado em CIÊNCIAS SOCIAIS pela Universidade Federal do Amazonas-UFAM. Atuou como docente de Sociologia no Colégio Militar de Manaus e pela Secretaria Estadual de Educação (SEDUC). Foi supervisor pedagógico e docente no Serviço Nacional de Aprendizagem Comercial - SENAC/AM. Tem experiência nas áreas de antropologia e sociologia, com ênfase em temas como: Cultura Popular, Patrimônio Cultural e Cidades e Sociologia Aplicada à Gestão de Pessoas em Práticas Comerciais, Turismo, Administração e Gestão de Projetos Sociais. Desenvolveu pesquisas na área do Patrimônio Imaterial pela Secretaria Municipal de Cultura de Manaus; É membro do Núcleo de Estudos de Cultura Popular, Patrimônio Cultural e Cidades da Universidade Federal do Amazonas; Atualmente, é servidor público e exerce o cargo de Antropólogo do Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional- IPHAN no Amazonas.
Leandro Eustáquio Gomes, Universidade Federal do Amazonas - UFAM

PhD in Social and Cultural Anthropology (2017), University of Coimbra / Portugal (Revalidation Federal University of Minas Gerais) - CAPES Scholarship; holds a Master's degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology (2012), by the University of Coimbra / Portugal (Revalidation Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) - Erasmus Mundus Scholarship- MONESIA; Specialization in Social Anthropology and Culture (2011), by the University of Coimbra - Portugal - Erasmus Mundus Scholarship - MONESIA; Graduated in Tourism (2009), by University Center Newton Paiva - Minas Gerais/ Brazil - Scholarship Program University for All - Prouni, being awarded two prizes: The Academic Highlight as Best Monograph 2009 and Academic High School, as Best Graduate Student 2009. He is interested in the areas of culture and heritage, experiences in research on Tourism and Anthropology, in which he emphasizes the ethnographic works on the Portuguese way to Santiago de Compostela, Portugal - Spain.
