Two Songs from Comus: Translation and Commentary

This commentary describes the translational goals and the process resulting in the verse translation of two songs from John Milton’s Ludlow Masque (alias Comus). The central goal of the translations was to generate homologous translations, which would encompass all relevant formal and propositional aspects of the source-texts. They were also intended to generate target-text poems which could be set to the same melodies Henry Lawes composed for Milton’s original poems.
