Abstract

Aim: To analyze the socioeconomic and behavioral factors associated   with   the   presence of dental plaque on the occlusal surface of first permanent molars of schoolchildren.

Materials and Methods: Through a cross-sectional study, the present study investigated 272 children, from 6 to 8 years of age, from two public schools, selected by convenience, in a large city located in Southeastern Brazil,. The dependent variable was the presence of visible plaque on the occlusal surface of the first permanent molars. The independent variables included sex, number of siblings living in the same household, monthly income, maternal education, previous dental experience, brushing of teeth, level of eruption of first permanent molars, and the presence of carious lesions. Data were analyzed by bivariate analysis (p<0.10) and the Poisson multiple regression analysis, using software Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS for Windows, version 17.0).

Results: Most of the children were identified with dental plaque on the occlusal surface of one of the first permanent molars (60.0%). Those children whose parents / guardians reported previous dental experience were 1.5 times more likely to be identified with dental plaque on the occlusal surfaces of first permanent molars.

Conclusion: The presence of plaque on the occlusal surface of the first permanent molars was only associated with the child’s previous dental experience.
