Abstract

Following the interdisciplinary tradition of musicology, the authors review the literature on musical acoustics and voice physiology and, then, present a case study on the possibilities for the integration of approaches deriving from musical acoustics, vocal physiology, and ethnomusicology towards the development of adequate concepts and tools to be used in the analysis of vocal practices in given musical styles

  • Samuel Araújo , Federal University of Rio de Janeiro

    he holds a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (USA), and is an Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology and Musical Folklore at the School of Music of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He coordinates the Ethnomusicology Laboratory at the mentioned institution.

  • Leonardo Fuks , Federal University of Rio de Janeiro

    he holds a Ph.D. in Musical Acoustics from Karolinska Institut, Stockholm (Sweden), and is an Assistant Professor of Musical Acoustics and Voice Physiology at the School of Music of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

  • Ulisses Amaral , Federal University of Rio de Janeiro

    he is a PIBIC-CNPq fellow and an undergraduate student in Conducting at the School of Music of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

  • Yahn Wagner Ferreira Pinto, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro

    he is an IC-FAPERJ fellow and an undergraduate student in Composition at the School of Music of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
