Abstract

The observation of students’ music making through the modalities of composing, audience-listening and performance, enables us to illuminate the nature of the relationship between musical understanding and skills. It is suggested that the manifestation of the optimal level of musical understanding depends on the refinement of the skills to accomplish a particular task. The results confirm this hypothesis, revealing the extent to which instrumental performance may become less appropriate an indicator of students’ musical understanding due to the complexity
involved in this modality. A follow-up study is being conducted focusing on the implications of the repertoire over musical development.

    Cecília Cavalieri França is an adjunct professor at the UFMG School of Music, where she coordinates the musicalization and keyboard areas of the Children's Musicalization Center (CMI). D. in Music Education (1998) and Master in Music Education (1996) from the Institute of Education of the University of London, England, where she defended the thesis Composing, performing andaudience-listening as symmetrical indicators of musical understanding under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Keith Swanwick. He is also a specialist in Music Education (1994) and Bachelor in Piano (1993) from UFMG.
